Discover your beautiful new smile!

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells made out of composite resin or porcelain that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. Alternative names for dental veneers are laminates and Lumineers. Our expert Tucson cosmetic dentist, Dr. James Raymond, will work with you to design the shape, size, color, and length of your veneers to help you achieve your ideal smile.

Veneers can be used to correct a variety of tooth imperfections. They can:

  • EAlter the shape of teeth
  • ELengthen short teeth
  • EClose gaps between teeth
  • EWhiten discolored and stained teeth
  • ECover cracked, chipped, and misshapen teeth
  • EGive your smile a more uniform appearance

WHAT IS DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN?

How it works: Veneers at Skyline Dental

The process of transforming a smile whether for cosmetic reasons, restoring multiple fractured and worn teeth, or for veneers, always begins with smile design. At Skyline Dental, we do it digitally, starting with full face photos to create a quick two-dimensional simulation for you to view and approve. We then take 3D scans of your teeth and design veneers to fit over your existing teeth so you can physically “test drive” the new design to verify esthetics (tooth position, shape, and length) and fit (the comfort of your bite). This creates a prototype we then use to design the final veneers, so there are no surprises when the final teeth are delivered.

Our veneers process is simple:

PATIENT STORIES: Jennifer

“I had an accident when I was younger that brought me to my first crowns. I had a fall recently where the crowns were damaged, so I went looking for the right dentist. It was very apparent to me when I came in that this is an exceptional place, and the right place for me.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do veneers last?

Every mouth is different so the answer to this varies, but if the patient follows through with proper at-home care and regular dental cleanings, porcelain veneers can last over 30 years and continue to look good. This type of outcome depends on how well the veneers are done, which is why selecting the right dentist is so important. How long veneers last also depends on the material used to restore them. Porcelain is a type of ceramic that is extremely durable and chip-resistant, and on average, it is even stronger than natural tooth enamel. Porcelain is also extremely stain resistant, which means follow-up tooth-polishing appointments are not necessary. Composite veneers, on the other hand, may need a touch-up polish from time to time and don’t last as long.

What other procedures are commonly done with veneers?

Oftentimes, clear aligners or clear braces are done prior to veneers to address crooked and crowded teeth issues that cannot be resolved with veneers alone. Professional tooth whitening is also commonly done, especially if we are not planning to veneer all teeth. Whitening first allows us to brighten all the teeth so we can select a bright but natural shade for the veneers so they can blend in with other teeth.

We can also combine veneers with other restorative and cosmetic dental procedures. For example, if you are missing one or more teeth, an implant or bridge may be necessary to fill in these large gaps in addition to veneers for your other teeth. Veneers are not suitable for every patient. If you grind your teeth, have severe tooth decay, or have any other oral health issues, you should discuss this with us so we can be sure to tailor your smile restoration to your unique needs.

How much do veneers cost?

The cost of veneers can vary from dentist to dentist. On the low end, veneers can cost $900, and on the high end, $3000 per tooth. At our office the average cost per tooth is $1500-$2000 for porcelain, and $900 per tooth for composite resin veneers. When investing in your smile, it’s important not to look for the cheapest option. At Skyline Dental we often have to replace veneers done elsewhere because they’re uncomfortable, look unnatural, or are failing due to chipping and leaking under the veneer. When veneers are done cheaply, the dentist will often shave teeth and remove too much enamel, leaving your underlying tooth weak and the veneers more prone to fail. With veneers, the old adage “you get what you pay for” rings true.

What’s the dental veneer process like and how long does it take?

From start to finish, porcelain veneers take about 1-3 weeks on average. This is mainly due to the turnaround time for the lab to fabricate your porcelain veneers. When prescheduled, the turnaround time can be shortened and the total process can take only 1 week. Before doing the veneers procedure, we start with a complete dental exam to ensure your overall dental health is good and you are a candidate for veneers. We then create a smile design that allows you to preview the final smile before treatment is started. This allows us to get patient feedback so that we have a great outcome that meets the desired goals and appearance. On preparation day, we prepare the teeth (minimally), take impressions for the lab, and make provisional teeth (aka temporaries) for the patient to further evaluate and “test-drive” the new smile. Appointment lengths vary, but if we are doing 10 veneers for example, the first appointment is 4 hours and often a form of sedation is used. Once the lab has completed the final porcelain veneers, the second visit takes about 2 hours to remove the provisional veneers and bond the final veneers.

Do veneers look like fake teeth?

Well done veneers should never look fake and should always be designed to blend in with the patient’s face to create a natural smile. Things that can contribute to teeth looking fake are their size, shape, and color. It requires a lot of expertise between the dentist and the dental ceramist to create natural-looking teeth with dental veneers. Sometimes, fake-looking teeth are the result of the patient requesting a certain color or size. It is important for the dentist and patient to be on the same page with the desired outcome. At Skyline Dental, we strive to enhance the appearance and esthetics of our patients through designing smiles that look authentic and natural.
